Still no power at home. Well, not completely true - one outlet has enough power to charge my phone and run the fan component of our AC. (The circuiting in our apartment is odd.)
We took the Steinway bus home last night - it was a very odd experience. The southern end is fine - all the stores are lit, power is on, everything seems normal. Then you notice a few stores closed or operating with their lights off. Then you cross Broadway and WHOOSH, ghost town. All the stores are shuttered, the traffic lights are out, and the people are exasperated.
The weather was pleasant - low 80's, lots of cloud cover but not overcast - so we sat outside and read on the strip of grass near our entryway. It was quite pleasant, and I was able to finish off my book, so maybe the loss of power isn't for naught.
Speaking of the book: anyone who lives in NYC must read it. It makes it crystal clear as to why 1977 was such a pivotal role in the city's transformation. The detailed information about the play-by-play for the blackout was particularly interesting, and seemed all the more relevant since I read that portion the day before we lost power. It's part sports, part politics, and all nearly impossible to put down. I give it my strongest recommendation, and look forward to more work from Mr. Mahler.
I'm not entirely sure who she talked to this morning, but someone has told Katie that the expected fix date for the power is Saturday. I just hope the weather holds, because if it keeps being this nice, I may not miss the power at all.
We've been without power for nearly 12 hours now.
Get on it, already.
